Why strength training matters more after 40

From your 30s onward, you slowly lose muscle and strength unless you train for it. Lifting two or three times a week is one of the best ways to slow that down. It also strengthens your bones, helps manage your weight, and keeps everyday things like carrying shopping and climbing stairs easy.

It's never too late to start. People who begin lifting in their 40s, 50s and beyond make steady progress, especially in the first year.

Built around your joints

Select any areas that give you trouble, such as lower back, knees, shoulders or hips. The AI leaves out the riskiest exercises for them and favors joint-friendly choices with controlled reps, and the schedule places rest days for recovery.

Questions

How often should you lift weights after 40?

Two to three full-body sessions a week is a great target, with at least a day of rest between them. Choose 2 or 3 days in the builder.

Is it safe to start lifting at 40 or 50?

For most people, yes. Start light, learn each exercise, and add weight gradually. If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure or an injury, check with your doctor first.

Should I lift heavy?

You don't have to max out. Sets of 8–15 reps taken close to failure build strength and muscle with less stress on your joints. Save heavy low-rep work for once you know the lifts well.

Is the AI workout plan generator really free?

Yes. Building a program is completely free, with no account, email or payment needed. You can build up to 3 programs a day.

Is it safe if I have an injury?

If you select an area with pain or a past injury, the AI avoids the riskiest exercises for it. It is general fitness guidance, not medical advice, so check with a doctor or physiotherapist before starting, and stop any exercise that causes pain.

How do I use the program?

Tap "Import this program into Progress" on your phone and the whole program loads into the Progress workout tracker (free to download), which logs every set and suggests when to add weight. You can also just follow the plan on the page.
